The USM Outing Club is a student run organization whose goal is to
give students the opportunity to get out and explore the New England
outdoors, be it through hiking, biking, backpacking, kayaking,
rafting, caving, climbing, skydiving, or camping. We plan trips for
almost every weekend during the year, usually sending out one or two
big trips each semester. Past excursions have included: Skydive New
England, Mt Washington Climb, Mt Katahdin/Baxter State Park, Weekend
hiking and bouldering in Acadia, Spring Adventure Weekend (climbing,
caving, kayaking, SCUBA diving in Western Mass.), Mt. Adams, and
day-hikes throughout southern Maine.
For students interested in indoor rock climbing, the club owns two
passes to the Maine Rock Gym in Portland. After paying a small
membership fee to the Outing Club, students' names go on a list at the
MRG, and get in for free.
Depending on student interest, we have also helped organize trips over
spring/february breaks. Some past options have included: Habitat for
Humanity in Florida, exploring and learning in the Belize rainforest,
backpacking on Cumberland Island in southern Georgia, and canoeing
through the mangrove forests of Everglades National Park.
If you enjoy being outside, if you love adventure, if
you want to have fun with other USM students who are sick of being
stuck on campus, join us!
